I recently made a guest appearance on Janine Hanmer Holman‘s podcast, The Cost Of Not Paying Attention, which aired on Monday 2 October 2024. You’ll find it — along with a full transcript — by clicking the image at the bottom of this post. It’s the one with a quote from Janine about my trilogy. You can also find it here on Apple and Spotify, but you won’t have the transcript.

Janine, a keynote speaker, author, trainer and consultant is based in California, USA.

Why The Name?

Her unusually named podcast starts from this thought: “Science reveals that up to 90% of what we do and say happens through unconscious thoughts and actions … so can we be more effective by doing more consciously?”

That’s why she started her podcast interview with this question: James, what’s the one thing you’ve noticed when working with clients that they’ve been failing to pay attention to … and what’s the cost of that inattention? What’s the problem that inattention is causing?

Our Conversation

  • What led me to write the trilogy.
  • What I’ve learned about the 25% of teams who are succeeding.
  • The hidden (Collective and Individual) psychological forces making it difficult for any work group to become a genuine team. And why being ignorant of them costs so many would-be teams.
  • The three big psychological issues every aspiring work group MUST address if it’s to become a genuine team: Commit, Combust and Combine (C-C-C).
  • The problem of micro issues (that cause teams to re-experience an earlier issue even though they thought they’d resolved it).
  • How knowing the dominant psychological C-C-C issue can help you figure out how best to take your would-be team further up the curve.
  • The difference between team consultancy and team coaching.
  • The importance of a would-be team agreeing in advance how it’s going to make decisions … and sticking to that.
  • Where trust and psychological safety fits within the Commit-Combust-Combine model.
  • The importance of a team figuring out its number one goal.
  • How humour can “oil the wheels” in team coaching.
